The mayor of Snellville on Monday said the city would be increasing security at Briscoe Park after six people, including five teenagers, were injured in two separate shootings there over the weekend.

The two incidents, which happened over a span of 18 hours, are not related, according to city officials.

“These isolated incidents are extremely concerning and will not be tolerated,” Mayor Barbara Bender said in a statement. “Be assured, T.W. Briscoe Park is and will remain a safe place for visitors to enjoy. We are taking these events very seriously and are working hard to ensure they do not happen again by increasing security efforts there immediately.”

Snellville police were called at about 9 p.m. Saturday to the park after reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found four teens between the ages of 14 and 17 who were shot.

The city later stated that a fifth teenager was injured and that the victims were all said to be stable. Officials added that they had several persons of interest.

“The GBI Crime Scene Unit is processing the scene, and investigators are actively following up on leads,” police said in a statement Saturday. “At this time, no additional information is available.”

A motive is unclear and no other details were provided about what led to the shooting.

At about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, police said officers again responded to the park, where they found a man who was shot once. The victim, who was not publicly identified, was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

“Preliminary investigation indicates this was a domestic-related incident involving the victim and another male,” police said in a statement.

Police said the suspected shooter got into a vehicle and remains at large. Their name was not released.

Following the shootings, the city said officers would be patrolling the area more frequently and that additional private security would be hired to “ensure continued safety.”

“A lighting and security camera plan is also being implemented at the park in response to these incidents,” the city added.

The large park, which closes at 10 p.m., features softball fields, basketball and tennis courts, a 1.2-mile paved walking trail, and playgrounds.

Anyone with more information about the shootings is asked to contact the department at 770-985-3555.
