Atlanta police said a woman’s relatives were defending her from her armed, estranged husband when he was struck over the head with a fire extinguisher and died at a Buckhead apartment complex late Wednesday.

Officers were called around 11:30 p.m. to the Cortland Peachtree Battle apartments on Peachtree Road after receiving reports of shots fired. When they arrived, they found a man with head injuries in a hallway, police said in a statement. He was declared dead at the scene. He was identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office as 35-year-old Frank Bond.

The incident was “a justifiable homicide,” police said.

“This was a domestic dispute where the parties were separated,” Atlanta police homicide Commander Andrew Smith told reporters at the scene. “The deceased individual arrived at this location, started an altercation, which led to him dying at the scene.”

According to Channel 2 Action News, investigators said they believe the man pulled a fire alarm and entered the building as residents evacuated.

The couple were in the process of getting a divorce, and the woman had family members with her in the apartment when the man arrived “to confront his wife,” officials said. Those relatives tried to disarm the man, and in that struggle the firearm went off.

No one was struck by gunfire, police said, but Bond “was then struck over the head with a fire extinguisher and died from the result of his injuries.”

No other details have been released by police.
