The man accused of killing his estranged wife and his 7-year-old niece at a DeKalb County apartment complex was in custody late Friday, according to police.

William Lewis Almond, 48, had been on the run for several hours before he was apprehended, police said. No details were released about where he was arrested.

Shortly before 3 p.m., DeKalb officers were called to the Forest of Columbia Apartments in the 2500 block of Columbia Drive. At the scene, officers found the woman and child with gunshot wounds.

“When officers arrived, they found 29-year-old Tomika Pullins and 7-year-old Dior Scott shot and not breathing inside one apartment,” police said in a statement late Friday. “Despite the heroic efforts of first responders, both victims sadly died at the scene.”

On Friday afternoon, investigators said the shootings appeared to be domestic in nature. Later Friday, police released the name of the suspect, identified as Almond.

According to witnesses, Almond was attempting to get into the apartment, police said.

“When he was not allowed in, they (witnesses) say he broke a window and fired multiple shots inside, hitting both victims,” police said.

Investigators said Almond was the estranged husband of Pullins and the child’s uncle.

After the shooting, Almond was seen running away from the scene, according to police. Shortly before 8:30 p.m., police confirmed he was in custody.

The shooting comes less than 24 hours after a 12-year-old boy was shot to death at a southwest Atlanta apartment complex, according to police.
