Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade caused traffic snarls Thursday in metro Atlanta.

After flying into Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Vance addressed Republican National Committee members in Atlanta before heading south for a midday event at an industrial refrigeration manufacturer in Peachtree City in Fayette County.

He wrapped up his speech in Peachtree City around 2:30 p.m. and headed back to the airport.

At around 12:45 p.m., I-75 southbound and I-85 southbound were closed before Freedom Parkway as the motorcade headed to Peachtree City. By around 1:15 p.m., both interstates had reopened.

His movement from the Atlanta airport to downtown prompted the temporary closure of parts of I-85 northbound, I-75 northbound and I-20, according to WSB Triple Team Traffic. The interstates closed and reopened within 20 minutes, at about 11:40 a.m.

Temporary flight restrictions filed with the Federal Aviation Administration began at Hartsfield-Jackson at 10:45 a.m. and centered around downtown Atlanta from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Flight restrictions centered in Peachtree City until 3:30 p.m.

The day’s restrictions ended at the Atlanta airport at 4:15 p.m.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
