A 19-year-old driver has been charged with first-degree homicide and driving under the influence after a pedestrian was killed Sunday morning in a hit-and-run crash in Brookhaven, authorities said.
The crash happened just before 2 a.m. at the intersection of Peachtree Road and Dresden Drive, according to police. The area is near Brookhaven Park.
According to his warrants, Kendall Hudson was traveling in a gray 2020 Nissan Altima that morning when he drove through a red light at unsafe speeds and struck 55-year-old Dustin Davis in the crosswalk. The impact sent Davis eight feet in the air and roughly 190 feet away, the warrant stated. He was found dead in the outside southbound lane of Peachtree Road, police said.
“Due to being under the influence of alcohol, said accused was unable to stop at a red light due to his speed and reaction time, causing him to strike a pedestrian on the crosswalk,” the warrant stated.
After the crash, police said Hudson briefly stopped at a shopping plaza a block south of the wreck. An officer approached the teenager and asked him to get out, but he drove away, according to the warrant.
The vehicle continued south on Peachtree Road into Atlanta, where investigators used traffic cameras and license plate readers to track and find it, authorities said.
Atlanta police helped during the search, which ended Sunday when Hudson was arrested and booked into the DeKalb County Jail, according to online records.
The teen is also facing charges of hit-and-run resulting in death, duty to report accident, obstruction of law enforcement officers, reckless driving and too fast for conditions/failure to obey traffic control devices.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing, police said. Hudson is being held without bond.
