Two girls were wounded in a shooting following a traffic crash Friday morning that police are calling a road rage incident.

Atlanta police said they later arrested a man they identified as Bennie McCoy on four counts of aggravated assault, hit-and-run and possession of a firearm. McCoy will be booked into the Fulton County Jail.

The encounter began in Atlanta and ended near a BP gas station in East Point, Channel 2 Action News reported.

A woman driving a Toyota Highlander was involved in the crash near Langford Parkway westbound at Sylvan Road at around 9:15 a.m., police said. She tried to flag down the other driver, and that’s when authorities said the motorist shot toward her SUV.

According to Channel 2, an 8-year-old and a 13-year-old who were on their way to school were in the SUV and were struck by the gunfire. The two were shot in the arm, the news station reported. Both were alert when they were taken to a hospital, police said.

The woman was unharmed, and the other driver fled the scene before police arrived, according to authorities.

East Point police initially responded to the scene and called Atlanta police, who are handling the investigation.
