A Fulton County Schools police officer has been removed from active duty pending an investigation of an incident on a bus where he apparently used a taser on a student, the school district said Friday.
“Because this matter involves students and an ongoing review, the district is unable to share additional details at this time,” officials said in a statement. “Fulton County Schools is committed to maintaining a safe learning environment for all students and staff, and to ensuring that all incidents involving school police are reviewed thoroughly and appropriately.”
A video of the incident, which involved a student at Langston Hughes High School in Fairburn, is making the rounds on social media. It begins with the officer telling the student he needs to leave because he’s on the wrong bus. When the student refuses, the officer curses and deploys his taser. The student begins to scream as the officer tries to remove him. The student is eventually removed from the bus with the help of another officer.
In a letter to parents, Langston Hughes Principal Darrell L. Stephens said the confrontation was an isolated incident.
“We are actively investigating the matter in coordination with the appropriate authorities,” Stephens wrote.
He also asked them not to share the video circulating online to protect the student’s privacy and avoid escalating the situation.
“We encourage you to speak with your child about responsible online behavior and the importance of not reposting or engaging with unverified or inappropriate content,” the letter says.
