Ahead of possible ice storms in Georgia, schools and colleges across the state announced that they’d be switching to remote learning or canceling classes altogether.

The following school systems will be closed Monday: Cherokee County, Clayton County, Cobb County, DeKalb County, Douglas County, Fayette County, Griffin-Spalding, Henry County and Marietta City Schools.

The following school systems are switching to remote learning on Monday: Atlanta Public Schools, City Schools of Decatur, Forsyth County, Fulton County, Gwinnett County and Rockdale County.

Many school systems in the northeastern Appalachian foothills of the state will be closed Monday or have announced at-home learning days — including Dawson, Fannin, Gilmer, Habersham, Lumpkin, Pickens, Rabun, Towns, Union and White counties.

“This is the email your kids have been waiting for,” said Marietta City Schools Superintendent Grant Rivera in a message to families about the closures on Saturday afternoon. He added that it’s too early to make a call about Tuesday, echoing the messages from other districts.

Remote learning looks different depending on the district. Students in Rockdale County will be expected to log on for live virtual lessons with their teachers via Microsoft Teams. Other districts, like Fulton County, are planning for asynchronous learnings days, where students complete assignments on their own time. Fayette County is encouraging students to spend time reading and completing assignments given Friday on the unexpected day off.

Meteorologists say Georgia and metro Atlanta should prepare for icy conditions and strong winds likely leading to power outages across the state. Dangerous driving conditions could last until Tuesday in some areas, as temperatures are expected to plunge into the teens and 20s early in the week.

Most metro Atlanta districts also canceled or rescheduled any activities scheduled at school campuses on Saturday and Sunday.

The following colleges or universities will be closed Monday: Chattahoochee Technical College, Kennesaw State University, Georgia Gwinnett College, Georgia State University, the University of North Georgia and the University of Georgia.
