A man was shot by police Tuesday afternoon when officers returned fire during the confrontation at a Sandy Springs home that left an officer grazed in the thumb by a bullet, according to officials.

The suspect and the officer were taken to a hospital, authorities said. The officer was treated and released the same day, while the suspect was hospitalized in stable condition, according to the GBI, which is investigating the incident.

The GBI said Herbert Mesa, 56, of Atlanta, was firing shots inside the home when officers arrived after someone reported the gunfire. Mesa’s friends had just been there to do a wellness check on him.

When police arrived at the residence on Carroll Manor Drive off North River Parkway around 11:15 a.m., they “went to make contact with the subject inside of the house and were met with gunfire,” Sandy Springs police spokesperson officer Jarrell Greene told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution at the scene.

No one else was in the house at that time, police said.

The Carroll Manor neighborhood is a collection of two-story townhome duplexes sandwiched between Roswell Road and Ga. 400 and near Sandy Springs Middle School.

After the gunfire, the suspect barricaded himself inside the home and eventually surrendered after some negotiating by SWAT team members, Greene said. Authorities have not said what charges he could face.

Shortly before 2 p.m., some law enforcement officers began leaving the area, which remained relatively quiet from the outskirts of the neighborhood. Some investigators remained at the scene until late Tuesday to collect evidence.
