Residents should bundle up as a blast of Arctic air is projected to bring freezing conditions to metro Atlanta in the coming days.

After experiencing the last bit of comfortable weather Sunday, freezing conditions are expected by Monday night into Tuesday, with temperatures reaching the low to mid-20s across the state, according to the National Weather Service.

Highs are projected to stay in the 40s during that time, though low temperatures will feel like the teens.

The front is expected to produce what will be the first widespread freeze of the season, arriving a couple weeks earlier than usual after experiencing 30 mph wind gusts on Sunday, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said. So prep your pipes and make sure your pets and plants are safe and warm.

“It’s going to feel colder with the wind,” Monahan added.

In response to the upcoming cold, the Weather Service announced a freeze warning from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday for portions of north central, northeast, northwest and west central Georgia. A freeze watch will be in effect from Monday night until Tuesday morning. Residents were advised to start making preparations for the cold.

It also led officials to open warming centers in both Gwinnett County and DeKalb County, where Sugar Creek Golf and Tennis Center and the Mystery Valley Golf Club were temporarily closed Monday and Tuesday due to the weather.

The five DeKalb warming centers will be open from 6:30 p.m. Sunday to Tuesday at 2585 Gresham Road, 2050-C Chamblee Tucker Road, 1340 McConnell Drive, 2771 Columbia Drive and 2944 Ember Drive.

In Gwinnett, they will be available from 6 p.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. Monday at 2755 Sawnee Avenue, 2750 Pleasant Hill Road, 6224 Jimmy Carter Boulevard, 3025 Bethany Church Road and 225 Benson Street.

For those expecting a winter wonderland, the cold blast likely won’t produce flurries in metro Atlanta. Though snow is possible Monday further north in the mountains, the NWS warns. Brasstown Bald, the highest point in Georgia, saw its first snow of the season a week ago.

The city’s freeze typically happens around Nov. 19, with Atlanta last seeing temps at or below freezing on Feb. 23 this year.

But warm weather is on the horizon after the freeze. Temperatures are projected to be in the low 70s from Thursday to Saturday, Monahan said.
