Behind a game-high 23 points from Jelani Hamilton, Georgia State was able to hold on for a 77-73 victory over Jacksonville State on Saturday.
Hamilton, who finished with his third 20-point game of the season, got almost half of his points from the free throw line, shooting 11-for-12 from the charity stripe for the Panthers (2-9).
Micah Tucker scored 16 points, and Jakai Newton finished with 13 points for the Panthers, who snapped a six-game losing streak.
Mostapha El Moutaouakkil led the way for the Gamecocks (4-5) with 18 points and eight rebounds. Jamar Franklin added 15 points and eight rebounds, and Jacoby Hill recorded 12 points.
Although Jacksonville State shot better from the field, 42% to 40%, Georgia State outscored the visitors by 17 points at the free throw line, hitting 27-of-32 attempts, while the Gamecocks were only 10-of-20 on free throws.
Hamilton put up 11 points in the first half for Georgia State, who led 37-31 at halftime. Georgia State turned a four-point second-half lead into an 11-point advantage with a 7-0 run to make it a 58-47 lead with 10:50 left in the half. Hamilton scored 12 second-half points.
