Another round of much-needed rain is gracing metro Atlanta on Thursday and is expected to linger through the weekend.

Gloomy skies are the first hint of rain moving in from Louisiana’s Gulf Coast, which should ease some of the drought conditions that have set in across the state, according to the National Weather Service.

It could also foil some tailgating plans for Saturday’s SEC championship game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

By Sunday, forecasts predict up to 3 inches of rain could fall in areas south of I-20, while far North Georgia may get less than an inch.

Light showers are expected throughout Thursday afternoon, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Ashley Kramlich said. Most of that rain should stay south of the city.

By midnight, showers will become more widespread and intensify through Friday’s early morning hours, according to Kramlich. A break should come in the afternoon before picking back up in the second half of the day.

On Saturday, the rain will still be around but shouldn’t drench the city. There is a 30% chance of showers in Atlanta that day, according to the Channel 2 forecast.

College football fans attending the 4 p.m. Georgia vs. Alabama game still should pack some rain gear and dress in layers. The stadium is climate-controlled, but rain could hinder pregame festivities and the walk back to the train or car.

The rain and cloud cover will keep high temperatures in the upper 40s and low 50s through Sunday. Lows should stay in the 40s.
