A gunman was arrested hours after two officers were injured Saturday while responding to an Atlanta apartment complex, police said.

Law enforcement were called to the complex in the 2400 block of Cheshire Bridge Road NE shortly before 8 a.m. after reports of shots fired, police said in a news release.

One officer was grazed in the head by a bullet inside the apartment and the other sustained cuts to the hand, police told reporters at the scene. Both were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and released around noon.

“When they made entry into one of the back bedrooms, they were immediately met by gunfire from an individual who was barricaded in the apartment,” Atlanta police Maj. Peter Malecki said.

Five officers returned fire, Malecki said, but the gunman was not struck. The SWAT team was then called to the apartment.

“We did try to negotiate. Unfortunately, he would not come out, and that’s what led to the lengthy standoff,” Malecki told reporters.

SWAT team members were eventually able to take the gunman into custody. He was identified by the GBI as 23-year-old Alonte Ray, of Stone Mountain.

Ray faces eight counts of aggravated assault against law enforcement, along with criminal damage to property and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, records show. He remains held at the Fulton County jail without bond.

The GBI was asked to investigate the shooting.

“We’re extremely grateful that no one in the community was injured,” Malecki said.

Saturday’s shooting occurred just hours before law enforcement from across the state gathered to mourn the death of Gwinnett police officer Pradeep Tamang.
