The new DeKalb animal shelter needs your help getting started

The new DeKalb animal shelter is set to open sometime this summer, and the nonprofit that runs it needs help getting it off the ground.

LifeLine Animal Project is asking residents to pitch in by giving needed items to the 33,440-square-foot shelter near DeKalb-Peachtree Airport. A "wishlist" page is setup on Amazon.

The shelter, which has been said to cost $8.6 million, will have 12 adoption rooms for dogs and three adoption rooms for cats. It also includes a clinic with spay and neuter services, surgery rooms and a lab.

DeKalb's existing animal shelter off Memorial Drive had health hazards, including bug infestations and mold, according to a 2011 report from a resident task force.
