Atlanta United made its first first-team roster acquisition of the offseason Tuesday with the free transfer of goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos.
Hoyos, 36 years old and a native of Argentina, joins on a one-year contract for 2026 with options for each of the next two seasons. He will occupy an international slot.
Hoyos joins Jayden Hibbert as two of what is expected to be three goalkeepers on the roster.
Hoyos spent the previous three seasons at Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina. He has made 341 appearances with 135 shutouts. He has also played for Velez Sarsfield, Gimnasia y Esgrima, Instituto Atletico Central Cordoba and Atletico de Rafaela.
“He’s a goalkeeper with a lot of experience in South America and a leader of the back line who is familiar with Tata’s (manager Gerardo Martino) style of play,” Atlanta United sporting director Chris Henderson said in a statement from the club. “Lucas will bring competition and leadership to our young goalkeeping group as we continue to strengthen our roster this offseason.”
