After Selection Sunday drama left the Birmingham Bowl as the only remaining bowl game without a matchup set as of Sunday evening, the teams have been decided.

Georgia Southern (6-6) accepted an invite to play in the game, but it wasn’t until after 9 p.m. that the Birmingham Bowl found an opponent to play the Eagles.

The second team to accept an invite from the bowl is Sun Belt rival Appalachian State (5-7).

The Birmingham Bowl made the official announcement Sunday night.

Brett McMurphy on On3 reported Auburn, Baylor, Central Florida, Florida State, Kansas, Rutgers and Temple, all teams with 5-7 records, declined an invite to play in the game.

Southern went 6-6 and 4-4 in Sun Belt Conference games this season. The Eagles, coached by Clay Helton, won 24-19 at Marshall on Nov. 29 to earn bowl eligibility for the fourth straight season.

Georgia Southern beat App State 25-23 during the regular season.

Last year’s Birmingham Bowl featured Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt, with the Commodores notching a 35-27 win.
